Dear Google Cloud Recruiter,

Tim Collins on the red carpet at the Television Academy for the Primetime Emmy's 2024 Viewing Party.

Welcome!

I hope you are having a wonderful day.

I’d like to share with you why I think I would be a great fit for the role of Film and Stage Producer, Cloud Marketing, as well as a great fit for the culture at Google.

Google’s workplace culture is known for curiosity, innovation, and goodness. These three attributes are core values I live by every day, and why I am excited to be considered for work at Google.

What Makes Me Unique

My Education

Interestingly enough, in high school, I got my start in the AV Club by Producing and and Directing live broadcasts of sports events for our local cable access channel.

In college, I received a Bachelors of Science in Communication Arts TV/Radio/Film from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Two uniquely relevant courses I took included stage lighting and theatrical set design.

It all started on YOuTube

In 2011 I moved to Los Angeles and began a career in entertainment, getting my start at The Young Turks YouTube channel. We frequented YouTube Space Los Angeles and I became very familiar with that facility (even visiting the supposedly haunted Spruce Goose building!).

15 Years and Counting

Since 2011, my career has had dozens of vectors, but they’ve all orbited around Producing and Creating engaging content that communicates clearly and effectively. My experiences include:

  • Producing, programming, and running tech on live streams seen by tens of thousands on YouTube, including daily shows and marathon election-coverage events.
  • Producing a 4 hour on-stage live event including scheduling/programming, talent wrangling, overseeing live switching and clip playback, working with lighting designers and audio engineers, and we even had fun! (Jump to the highlight video)
  • Overseeing a department of 4 to create, edit, and publish content to paying premium members.
  • Picture Editing and overseeing Assistant Editors on Animated series for Netflix and Amazon Studios. (Jump to my reels if you’re curious)
  • Creative decision making on content for clients including:
    • Orange County Soccer Club
    • APM Music
    • Eric Swalwell for President
    • American Career College
    • Fortress Studios

no one can go it alone

If I were in a bind and needed advise or support, the people I would call include:

  • Jessica Roulston: Head Producer for live events at Fortress Studios.
  • Natalie Pohorski: Lead Producer on Call of Duty at Activision.
  • David Young: System Administrator at the Warner Bros lot.
  • Dan Keston: Advertising Executive and Independent Producer, including Oscar Award Winning Dallas Buyer’s Club.

the technology side of management

Here are some of the skill sets I’ve picked up that help me manage projects, teams, schedules, and assets:

  • Google Cloud’s B2C services have been my internet-project-home for as long as they’ve existed; I got an invite to Gmail back in 2004, for a whole gigabyte of free storage!
  • I am Admin of Google Workspaces for the Southern California Paleontological Society.
  • I have a complete understanding of the technology it takes to run a live event, including experience running cameras, switch boards, lighting boards, audio mixers, setting up lights/mics/fog machines/etc, and creating programs for a team to follow.
  • I have experience in software including Shotgrid, Asana, Trello, Yardi, Slack, and as well as an appreciation for the Kanban method.
  • I have administrated website platforms including Wix and WordPress installations (including the website you’re reading right now!)
  • When it comes to filling in in a pinch, I have many additional skill sets including:
    • Deck building for pitching events, business ideas, television series, and more in Google Slides. (Jump to business pitch developed in Slides)
    • As a Member of the Television Academy, I have access to resources and a network of professionals and professional training tools.
    • Mastery of the Adobe Creative Cloud including Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere, Light Room, InDesign, and Audition. (Jump to Motion Graphics Reel from 2019)
    • 3D printing and 3D modeling in Blender 3D, Autodesk Fusion 360.
    • PC and Server hardware building/admin.

Consider Tim Collins for Film and Stage Producer, Cloud Marketing

Thank you so much for reading. This role at Google is a fantastic opportunity. I think that we humans often tend to think that the job we want most must be the job everyone else also wants most. This is certainly impossible, but I can’t help feeling that I must be in competition with everyone for this role.

It is from this place of confident humility that I say thank you for reading, and ask that you reach out to me to discuss joining your team!

Have a wonderful day,

Tim Collins
